What ratio does a nursery need for under-twos?
One adult to every three children under two, in group settings in England.
What ratio applies to two-year-olds?
One adult to every five two-year-olds in group settings in England.
When can a room run at one adult to thirteen children?
Only for children aged three and over, and only when a qualified teacher, Early Years Teacher or other suitably qualified Level 6 practitioner is working directly with the children. Otherwise the minimum is one adult to eight.
Do staff on a break count towards the ratio?
No. Ratios apply to the staff actually working directly with the children, so break, lunch and off-the-floor cover has to be planned in.
Do students and apprentices count in the ratio?
Students and apprentices aged 17 and over may be included at the provider's discretion when the provider is satisfied they are competent and responsible. Under-17s must be supervised and do not count.
