Best nursery management software UK 2026: an honest comparison
Last updated
There is no single best nursery management software. Famly and Blossom Educational suit larger settings and groups that want a rich parent app and observation tracking. Parenta and First Steps appeal on price and familiarity. Tapestry dominates learning journals but is not a full management system. DullDocs, our own product, is the compliance-first option for independent nurseries that care most about being inspection-ready. This guide says who each is actually for, including when we would not recommend ourselves.
Updated July 2026.
Why you should trust a comparison written by a vendor
You should not, automatically. So here are our cards on the table: DullDocs is built for independent, single-site nurseries whose biggest software problem is compliance paperwork, not parent engagement. If you run a 12-site group and want the slickest parent app on the market, we will say so plainly below and point you elsewhere. What we ask in return is that you judge every tool in this list, ours included, against the same question: what problem do you actually need solved?
The comparison at a glance
| Software | Best for | Core strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DullDocs | Independent nurseries focused on compliance | Ofsted readiness: policies, SCR, staff checks, EYFS records kept inspection-ready automatically | Not built for large groups; parent engagement is not the focus. £19 to £39/month founding pricing |
| Famly | Larger settings and groups | Polished all-in-one platform with a strong parent app | Quote-based pricing; more platform than a small setting may need |
| Blossom Educational | Established nurseries wanting an all-rounder | Broad feature set across learning, operations and finance | Quote-based; evaluate against the features you will actually use |
| Parenta (Abacus) | Settings wanting admin plus funding support | Long UK track record, funding and billing heritage | Interface feels its age in places; check the modules you need |
| First Steps | Budget-conscious smaller settings | Straightforward nursery admin | Lighter on compliance workflow; confirm current development pace |
| Tapestry | Learning journals and EYFS observations | The default for observations and parent sharing of learning | Not a full management system: no real admin, billing or compliance layer |
| eyLog | Settings wanting observations plus admin | Combines learning journal with management features | Compare the depth of each half against specialists |
| Connect Childcare | Multi-site groups | Group-level reporting and operations | Aimed above the needs of most single sites |
How to choose: three questions before any demo
- What is the cost of your current problem? If you lose six hours a week to paperwork and inspection prep, a compliance-first tool pays for itself before any parent app does. If enquiries and occupancy are the bottleneck, prioritise marketing and booking features instead.
- Who will actually use it? A feature-rich platform your team does not open is more expensive than a simple one they use daily, whatever the price list says.
- What does inspection day look like? Ask every vendor the same question in the demo: "Show me what I open when Ofsted calls tomorrow." The length of the pause is data. The new report card framework grades leadership partly on how well you know your own setting; your software should make that evidence one click away.
Where DullDocs fits, and where it does not
DullDocs exists because compliance is the part of nursery software everyone else treats as a checkbox. We keep your policies current, your single central record complete, staff checks and training tracked with expiry warnings, and your EYFS documentation organised, so inspection prep stops being a fortnight of panic. Founding pricing is £19, £29 or £39 a month, published openly.
We are the wrong choice if you want a rich parent-facing app, group-level dashboards across many sites, or deep learning-journal features: pick Famly, Connect Childcare or Tapestry respectively for those jobs, and some settings sensibly run DullDocs for compliance alongside a journal tool.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best nursery management software in the UK?
It depends on your bottleneck. For compliance and Ofsted readiness at an independent setting, DullDocs. For a polished all-in-one with a strong parent app at a larger setting or group, Famly or Blossom Educational. For learning journals specifically, Tapestry.
What is the best free nursery management software?
Fully free options are rare and usually limited or ad-supported. Most settings do better starting with free resources (like our free templates) and a low-cost tool than with a free platform they outgrow in months.
What software do most UK nurseries use?
No single platform dominates. Famly, Blossom, Parenta and Tapestry are among the most commonly seen; many settings combine a management tool with a separate learning journal.
Is there an alternative to Famly for small nurseries?
Yes. If Famly is more platform than you need, DullDocs (compliance-first, £19 to £39/month), First Steps and eyLog are the usual shortlist for independent settings.
